How To Do Well In Mathematics

Math's is Not a Spectator Sport. You cannot learn mathematics by just going to class and watching the teacher's lecture. In order to learn mathematics you must be actively involved in the learning process. You've got to attend class and pay attention while in class. If you aren't willing to be actively involved in the process of learning mathematics, both inside and outside of the class room, then you will have trouble passing any math's class.

Work to Understand the Principles. In order to pass a math's exam you will need to do more than just memorize a set of formulas. You need to understand how to use the formulas and that is often far different from just memorizing them.

Mathematics is Cumulative. You've always got to remember that mathematics syllabus is cumulative. Almost everything you do in a math's class will depend on mathematics that you've previously learned.

Be independent, but don't be afraid to ask question. Try to complete the assignments at first without assistance. If you seek help too soon, either from your teacher or classmate, you will not gain the maximum benefit from your work. On the other hand, you must ask questions and get help when necessary.

Listen in the class. The fundamental principles and ways of thinking, as well as many of the finer points, will be developed in class. You must pay careful attention to these discussions in order to really understand what is going on.

Concentrate on fundamentals. Do not try to learn math's by memorizing formulas and examples. Most mathematics is based on a few fundamental principles and definitions. If you concentrate on these fundamentals and try to see how each new topic is simply another application, you will need to memorize very little new material.

Put in the extra effort and time while studying mathematics. If you want to get good grades, you have to put in the time working, learning, and continually practicing.

Don't multitask while studying. In order to learn you need to give the material your full attention, and that means ignoring everything else for a block of time. Don't text, chat or use Facebook etc when you are studying.

Listen When Others Ask Questions. When other students ask questions make sure you listen to both the question and the answer. It may be that the student asking the question thought of something that you didn't think of.

Take Good Notes. Try to write down everything that teacher writes on the board. It may seem easy when watching the teacher, but it often is not so easy when it comes time for you to do it. A good set of notes will help remind you how to do these problems.

Get Into A Study Group. It is often helpful to study in groups. People often look at things differently so someone else may see how to solve a problem that can't do or understand a topic that you find confusing.

Do the work and do it on time. You must do all the assignments regularly and make up any work you miss when you are absent. No excuses! Don't wait until the last minute and then try to rush through the assignments. If you spend just enough time on your lesson to get the answers, but do not take time to really understand the underlying principles, you will soon become confused.

Practice, Practice, Practice. The only way to really learn how to do problems is work lots of them. The more you work, the better prepared you will be for the exam.

Persevere. You will not just instantly get every topic that is covered in a math's class. There will be some topics that you will have to work at before you completely understand. The only way to really grasp some topics is to go home and think about it and work some problems. You will often find that after a little work a topic that initially baffled you will all of a sudden make sense.

Seek Help If You Need It. If you are having trouble with your math's class you have many options open to you and you should take advantage of them. You can go to your teacher to get help.

Develop a study schedule. This will allow time to work on math's every day (at least two hours or more of math's per day). Continual reinforcement of newly acquired math's skills will help you remember the material.

Attend class regularly. Since information in math's is sequential, if you miss a class, you miss a step in the sequence that you will need to catch up on, or you will fall behind. Sit in the front of the class if you have trouble with math's.

Have a notebook for Math's only. In note taking for math's, be sure to write down all formulas as well as all examples and steps.

Be neat and accurate. These are the habits that will save you frustration, and you must deliberately practice them to make them into habits. Keep your work organized.
